The Eden Project once a year turns their park over to the Dinosaurs! Basically the same bio-domes but with dinosaur props. A beautiful day out and a lovely time had by all.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/128680841@N03/albums/72157658452905882 We head to a little village called Ponsanooth and the Cornwall Wildlife trust of Kennall Vale, http://www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/nature_reserves/where_to_find_the_nature_reserves_1/Cornwall_Wildlife_Trust_Kennall_Vale_nature_reserve_Ponsanooth. An old dynamite factory that blew up in 1838. It is a beautiful hike with waterfalls and woodland with the occasional building in ruin, some of which you can see the burnt timbers still in place.
From there we headed to a small brewery that I just found, Dynamite Valley, https://www.facebook.com/dynamitevalley. A couple of good fellows just starting out, making beer that they like to drink. Right up my alley. https://www.flickr.com/photos/128680841@N03/albums/72157658479504291 We get up on a beautiful Saturday and head west. The ultimate destination is Lands End, but the path is not defined.
We head toward Penzance and decide to take a detour to Mousehole, http://www.cornwall-online.co.uk/westcornwall/mousehole.htm. I small village on the south coast. We stop in a car park and admire the view of St. Michael's mount. From there we continue our journey to Lands End. When we get there we are surprised to learn that is is an amusement park of sorts. We pay for our parking and take a walk around the furthest west point on mainland UK. The only thing between us and Newfoundland is the Atlantic Ocean. We take in the view for a while, send our love over the ocean back home and then head off towards Zennor and back to the house. Along the way we encounter a herd of cows in the road, nothing to do but wait for them to pass us by. One of the passing cows knocks into our side mirror and turns in it. Lucky there wasn't any damage. https://www.flickr.com/photos/128680841@N03/albums/72157656152353293 Disclaimer: I do not know what makes a baby shower so I guessed.
Since we are so far away from home and all of our friends I thought it would be nice to give Olivia a baby shower. Doing my best I made a diaper cake, or nappy cake for the UK readers, got some flowers, cupcakes, and sparkling grape juice. A package with baby stuff from home rounds out the menagerie. Not the best but I was heartfelt and appreciated. https://www.flickr.com/photos/128680841@N03/albums/72157658058275129 We head up to Southampton to see Chris, Olivia's Boss, and his family to visit them for his birthday party. While there we visit Netley Abbey, http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/netley-abbey/, one of the oldest most complete surviving abbeys. The birthday party was a lot of fun and we met several nice people. The next day we visit the Tudor House, http://www.tudorhouseandgarden.com/, a museum in the restored Tudor house from the 15th century. A must see if ever in Southampton with a couple hours of time on your hands.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/128680841@N03/albums/72157658410681526 Off we go in search of the Bodmin Beast. A ferocious creature that supposedly lives on the moors of Bodmin and looks like a giant black panther. There is a festival, https://www.visitcornwall.com/whats-on/bodmin-moor-tamar-valley/bodmin/bodmin-riding-and-heritage-day#.VjdE1_nhDIU , in the town of Bodmin with a parade and a medieval demonstration area. A Beast is marched through town in chains and put on trial. All in all a fun time.
From there we drive to Boscastle, http://www.visitboscastleandtintagel.com/. A small seaside village on the north coast of Cornwall. There we visit a witchcraft museum, http://www.museumofwitchcraft.com/, and walk along the coastal path to the inlet. https://www.flickr.com/photos/128680841@N03/albums/72157658344875225 On a beautiful Saturday we head to the north coast and the beach of Watergate bay for Beach Polo. Neither of us knowing exactly what is involved with Polo let a lone beach polo. There were all kinds of food vendors, a Landrover expo a horse stunt show and of course polo.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/128680841@N03/albums/72157658325870735 We decide to get up and take a drive. First stop is Restormel Castle, http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/restormel-castle/ . A 13th century castle in ruins that was built by the Black Prince.
Next we drive to Fowey and St. Catherine's Castle, http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/st-catherines-castle/. A castle built on the sea side to defend the inlet at Fowey. https://www.flickr.com/photos/128680841@N03/albums/72157657904714120 The Falmouth Sea Shanty. A festival of the old sailing shanties that were sung on the sailing ships of past.
We start out by taking the ferry from Truro to Falmouth. It winds down the river Fal into the Falmouth bay. We were able to see many different old sailing ships sailing up and down the inlet. Once in Falmouth there were several different groups singing shanties all over town. The weather was good and the event was a lot of fun. https://www.flickr.com/photos/128680841@N03/albums/72157658251893036 |
